Impaired swallowing as a nursing diagnosis by NANDA International

Aim: The aim of the study was to search for findings related to NANDA International nursing diagnosis Impaired Swallowing (00103), focusing on the incidence of this nursing diagnosis in different groups of patients and its establishment using the NANDA International classification system.

Methods: Published information concerning NANDA International nursing diagnosis Impaired Swallowing (00103), its establishment and incidence in patients were found by a sensitive search strategy. The following electronic databases were searched for relevant information: Bibliographia Medica Čechoslovaca, MEDLINE, Springer and ProQuest, together with Google.

Results: Although paper authors frequently mention impaired swallowing, it is rarely diagnosed using the NANDA International classification system. Nursing diagnosis Impaired Swallowing (00103) as diagnosed according to NANDA International was largely present in intensive care unit patients, oncology patients and those with oesophageal disease.

Conclusion: Impaired swallowing is a frequent condition in nursing which can be diagnosed using the NANDA International classification system. Further research may show whether NANDA International may be used in clinical practice to diagnose impaired swallowing.
