Emotional changes of women in puerperium
- Department of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ostrava
Aim: The aim of the presented study was to determine the occurrence of emotional changes for women in the early puerperium and to evaluate the emotional changes using the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale.
Methods: For occurance of emotional changes for women in the early puerperium was used the EPDS (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale), which is translated into the Czech language (Honzak, 1999, p. 53). The exploratory sample consisted of 79 postpartum women hospitalized on puerperium wards in the Municipal Hospital Ostrava (n=35) and in the Hospital Frydek-Mistek (n=44).
Results: Pronounced emotional changes that already might have lead to postpartum depression (20-23 points) were confirmed by two informants. Less severe findings of emotional changes were detected at 77 women. Zero score have reached only four women of the reference file. Greater tendency to develop postpartum depression has been demonstrated at primiparas and unmarried women in the age group of 21-29 years.
Conclusions: The age of the woman and her family background are important factors, which have influence on the emergence of emotional changes in the postpartum period. It is therefore important to support a woman psychologically, identify her needs and intervene early when problems arise.
