Importance of content validation of hopelessness in development of instruments for hope measurement
- Department of Nursing, Jessenius Medical Faculty in Martin, Comenius University in Bratislava
Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the content validity of nursing diagnosis Hopelessness and to identify the related defining characteristics applicable in development of instrument for hope measurement in clinical practice.
Methods: Fehring's Diagnostic Content Validity Model was used to measure importance of diagnostic characteristics of Hopelessness. Relationships between identified characteristics was evaluated by correlation analysis. Factor analysis was used to examine factor loadings of identified characteristics.
Results: Results of the study confirm that defining characteristics of the diagnosis Hopelessness are following: expresion of lost sipiritual beliefs and meaning of life, passivity, expression of inability to plan future, expressions of distrust of own strengths and abilities, expression of belief that the problems will always be here, expressions of distrust of result, decreased affect, expressions of experience of loneliness, expression of distrust of help. Only 3 NANDA characteristics and 5 Nowotny Hope Scale characteristics have reached high importance.
Conclusion: We suggest to use characteristics that reached high importance in the development of instrument to measure hope in routine clinical practice. This instrument involves items from three factors identified in factor analysis. The puropse of future research is to determine its psychometric properties.
