Monitoring of complications in acute cardiac pacing

Aim: The aim of our study was to determinate the incidence of complications depending on the age and gender of patients, duration of implantation of stimulation electrode, of selected access point of implementation stimulation in patients hospitalized at the Arrhythmia unit and Coronary care unit in University hospital in Martin.

Methods: For the collection of required data we have used content analysis of medical records, hospital information system, surveillance based on own designed sheet. The data were analysed using descriptive and inductive statistic. The sample consisted of 38 patients in the range from 58 to 93 years of age. Patients were acutely admitted to ICU with the aim of realization of temporary cardiac pacing, which lasted 5.28 ± 2.33 days in average.

Results: On the basis of processed data, we found incidence of complications in 17 patients, where the most frequent complication was local infection. Using statistical analysis we found a significant relationship between duration of implementation of stimulation electrode and incidence of local infection, which resulted in strong significant correlation (r(S) = 0.518, p = 0.001) and similarly, we noted correlation in the incidence of haematoma (r(S) = 0.329, p = 0.023).

Conclusion: Using analysis of the obtained data we have identified the most frequently occurring complications in conjunction with the temporary cardiac pacing. Most often we have noted the incidence of local infection that is associated with subsequent nursing care, but also with significant predictors, which can greatly affect its development.
