Objective: To find out the influence of preventive strategies on the occurrence of catheter-associated urinary tract infection.

Methods: Using the method of evidence based practice were found in electronic databases (PubMed, American Journal of Medicine, Virginie Henderson Library, Google Scholar, PubMed Central, Best Evidence for Nursing, Cochrane Collaboration) 25 relevant studies (meta-analysis, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, prospective cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, retrospective studies, case-control studies).

Results: We did not found any strong evidence, which could clearly validate or refute the influence of prevention strategies used (silver-impregnated urinary catheter, intensive hand hygiene practices, determination of the optimal length of the inserted urinary catheter) on reducing the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infection.

Conclusion: Strong evidence confirming the influence of preventive strategies were not found, however valid and relevant outcomes and recommendations of international studies may be useful in the care of catheterised patients in conditions of Czech nursing.
