Evaluation of the efficacy of education of vascular-surgery patients in prevention and care of diabetic foot syndrome

The authors in the article present results of the experimental interventional (uncontrolled) study. The efficiency of education of vascular-surgical patients in prevention of diabetic foot syndrome and diabetic reulceration was evaluated.

Aims: The aim was to identify how educational program influenced the behaviour of patients in relationship to the implementation of the feet care of diabetics among patients with Diabetic Foot Syndrome (DFS) and Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), also to identify the areas with significant changes undertaken in connection with educational interventions and to map the educational determinants which had impacted on the client's behaviour.

Method: The effect of intervention in the examined file was compared with data acquired before education (after 6 months). For the collection of empirical data was used contextual analysis diagnosis in medical documentation, a structured dialogue, a structured observation, own design questionnaire.

Results: We found out a higher level of knowledge in diabetics, who had the experience with ulceration, the degree of motivation in patients with PAD was increased. The statistical analysis showed the dependence of willingness, motivation for implementation of activities in the prevention of complications of DM by the group and individual teaching. After education we noted statistically significant weight loss, positive changes in blood pressure as systolic and diastolic.

Conclusion: The educational program had a positive impact on several factors of the efficiency of education of diabetics in vascular surgery.
