Quality of life of women with stress urinary incontinence

Aim: The objective was to ascertain the quality of life of women with stress incontinence prior surgery using an implantation TOT tape (Trans Obturator Tape) and quality of life of women after the implantation TOT tape below the urethra.

Methods: Into the file for an exploratory investigation were included 58 women in the age group 48 - 66 years with stress urinary incontinence. Interview Survey (May 2009 - February 2010) was implemented in a standardized questionnaire I-QoL - Incontinence - Quality of Life Questionnaire (Huvar, 2003). The quality of life for women with stress urinary incontinence was evaluated in percentage according to the formula.

Results: The investigation revealed that the quality of life of women with stress incontinence before and after the implantation of the TOT tape differed. The quality of life improved for those women who had undergone surgery using the TOT tape. It was also revealed that the majority of women in this survey had given birth at least twice in their lifetime. The pelvic floor muscle is exercised mostly by women prior surgery and most information regarding the surgery using TOT tape was obtained from the Gynaecologist. The feeling of incomplete health in the context with urinary incontinence prior surgery is experiencing 7 out of 58 participants, while after the surgery it was only 1 out of interviewed. It was determined that urine leakage does not significantly affect sex lives of women with stress incontinence prior surgery, however after the surgery women show in this area better quality of life.

Conclusion: Stress incontinence is a condition that can be easily treated and unnecessarily reduces the quality of life. Coming to terms and acknowledging the problems associated with urine leakage, broadening the education on the subject can significantly improve the awareness of women in the bio-psycho-social field.
