Internal consistency of the CAM scale for assessment of acute confusion in conditions of the Slovak and the Czech Republic

Assessment of nursing diagnosis of acute confusion by nurse with the use of valid and reliable screening tool is important. Early recognition and accurate diagnosis are inevitable for effective management of acute confusion.

Objective: The aim of the study was to identify the differences and the extent of dependence in the criteria of the Slovak translation of the CAM scale (Confusion Assessment Method).

Methods: The sample consisted of 400 patients with an average age of 77.57 years, who were diagnosed with acute confusion during hospitalization in 10 selected clinical sites in the conditions of the Slovak and the Czech Republic. The CAM scale was used to assess the defining characteristics of acute confusion as per NANDA International Taxonomy II.

Results: Analysis of the results of the t-test indicates the significant differences between the individual criteria for CAM. In term of the interrelationship of the criteria scale CAM very high correlation was shown in the first criterion (Evidence of acute change in mental status) and fourth criterion (Scope of level of consciousness) in the Spearman, Pearson and Kendall tau correlations.

Conclusion: This verification adds to previous evidence that the CAM scale for the rapid diagnosis of delirium is a valuable screening tool to assess the nursing diagnosis of acute confusion in clinical practice. It should be noted that in our contentions further studies are needed to verify the range of CAM for the nursing.
