Assessment of activities of daily living
- Department of Nursing, Jessenius Medical Faculty in Martin, Comenius University in Bratislava
Aim of work: Analyze of concept functional status/assesment, disability, self-care, ADLs and assessment tools in gerontology and nursing care.
Background: The assessment of functional status/ADLs is important when caring for older adults or chronically ill patients. Normal aging changes, worsening chronic illness, and hospitalization can contribute to a decline in the ability to perform tasks necessary to live independently in the community. The Basic ADLs measure the most elementary aspects of self-care including the ability to independently bathe, dress, move, toilet and feed. The Instrumental ADLs evaluate the ability of the client to perform more complex daily tasks such as taking medicine, shopping, preparing meals.
Methods: The following methods were employed in the work - search for the literature, analysis, synthesis, comparison of dokuments.
Analysis: The information from a functional assessment can provide objective data to assist with targeting individualized rehabilitation needs or to care plan (for nursing care or home-maker services). The Barthel Index of ADLs measures functional independence in personal care and mobility; it was developed to monitor performance in long-term hospital patients before and after treatment and to indicate the amount of nursing care needed. The Katz Index of ADLs is the most appropriate instrument to assess functional status as a measurement of the client's ability to perform ADLs independently. It was developed to measure the physical functioning of elderly and chronically ill patients. The Lawton IADLs is an appropriate instrument to assess independent living skills. These skills are considered more complex than the BADLs. The instrument is most useful for identifying how a person is functioning at the presenttime, and to identify improvement or deterioration over time. The early detection of such risk factors for functional decline, coupled with specific interventions, may help reduce dependency and functional disability.
Conclusion: The instruments is most effectively used among older adults in a variety of care settings. It is important to use tools ADLs seriously by professionals.
